NRA endorses Cole McNary: What does it matter what state treasurer thinks about guns?

The National Rifle Association has announced its backing of Republican Cole McNary for state treasurer, bringing up the question- What in the world does the state treasurer have to do with gun rights? The news release is printed below.

Representative Cole McNary, Republican nominee for state treasurer, today received the endorsement of the National Rifle Association.

“I have always believed that the Second Amendment speaks to our basic individual rights and firmly protects liberty,” said Cole McNary.  “The NRA works endlessly to defend the Second Amendment and I am honored that they have endorsed my campaign.”

“As a legislator I supported the NRA agenda whole-heartedly and believe their work provides us with an essential foundation to maintain a free society.  I look forward to continuing the defense of these rights as a public servant,” he added.

McNary also received an “A” rating from the NRA.
