Key Meetings
-On Wednesday, I met with Chamber President Rob O’Brian to discuss ongoing and potential economic development efforts.
-Later that day, Councilman Stinnett, staff from the parks department, and I met with representatives from the Joplin Sports Authority and USSSA to discuss the relationship/success between the city, JSA and USSSA in bringing various tournaments to Joplin, and the positive impact those events have on our local economy.
-On Thursday, I attended the monthly One Joplin steering team meeting to hear an update from the focus teams for health, poverty, and human services on their efforts to address key issues in their fields. Wave Two of the One Joplin effort will be taking place starting this fall, with a focus on some new topics, that you may begin hearing about soon.
-Later that afternoon, Sue West, Vice President of Business Customer Service at AT&T, was in town and asked for a visit with the mayor for an update on things that are going on in Joplin. We discussed business, infrastructure, and other economic development efforts taking place in the city.
Miscellaneous
-Please follow this link for the latest public works update regarding their projects and activities.
-Earlier this week, staff met with representatives from the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency to discuss three sewer projects on our list of FEMA/SEMA reimbursements. They have requested additional information from staff for their review of the eligibility of those projects for reimbursement, which we are working to provide. But I wanted to share this information with you to indicate that progress is being made on the reimbursements, and as updates become available I will pass them along.
-On Monday, we received an update from MoDOT that the meeting of the select committee that will consider our application to rename a segment of the 249 bypass after Governor Hearnes, has been set for September 13th .
In the Pipeline
-In response to this week’s announcement about postponing the opening of Mercy Park, someone on social media suggested we have it on a weekend instead of during the week, which we think is a great idea. So, weather permitting, we will have the grand opening on August 27th.
-Please mark your calendars for budget work sessions on August 22nd, 29th, and September 12th , to begin discussions in advance of our final work sessions on September 20, 21, and 22nd (if necessary).
-Finally, I wanted to give you a reminder that if you have any comments/changes for the draft of the Historic Preservation Plan that was presented to you this past Monday night, please send them to me by no later than August 19th so I can pass them along to staff.
