Judge sentences Hailey Owens murderer to death

Greene County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Mountjoy sentenced Craig Michael Wood, 49, to death Thursday for the February 2014 murder of 10-year-old Hailey Owens of Springfield.

The judge made his ruling after a jury failed to reach a decision about Wood's penalty in November.

Wood, a coach and teacher's aide at a Springfield elementary school, kidnapped, raped and murdered the girl, then stuffed her body in trash bags, which were discovered by police when they searched his home.

My heart goes out to Hailey’s family due to the likely endless appeals that will occur. If they and the public are lucky, his sentence will be carried out in 15 years. This is what murder does to the victims family and community. It’s sad, but true. I hope he thinks about what he’s done every night and day until then. I still thank the Judge for his decision.

It's good that he's not going to be around to hurt or kill again.
I hope he finds Jesus.
I hope Hailey's family finds peace.

It's too bad that it will take that long for the sentence to be carried out. Justice should be swift. Criminals have more privileges than victims.
I agree with you 100% though, the judge made the right decision.
